The Berengaria Hotel in 2024
Almost 100 years ago a magnificent hotel open in the heart of the Troodos Mountains, at Prodromos. After an illustrious life it eventually closed in 1984 and has laid dormant ever since. The only inhabitants now aside from the local flora and fauna are a number of ghosts, if you believe local legends. However, it was announced a while ago that there was a cast iron project to open the hotel again. Indeed, when I visited a year ago there was definite activity on the restoration front. I recently went back for another look, and they have ramped it up a notch. The renovation work is now in full swing...
View From Above

From a distance, it doesn't seem that a lot is happening. The roof has now gone, but that's about it. But look closer...
A Lot Of Poles

The entire hotel exterior is now clad in scaffolding.
Before I go any further, if you have never seen pictures of this place or heard its history, you should check our our first article on Berengaria Hotel.
Wow

So I think it is safe to say that the renovation work is underway and being taken very seriously. If you read that article, you will no doubt be aware of the somewhat grisly stories associated with the Hotel. Since that article, the superstitious have ramped it up a notch. Originally, the hotel was going to be renovated by a Russian-American gentleman. He was going to turn it into a high-class casino. But a few days before he was due to sign the purchase agreement, his son, an athlete, died in an accident. The Heartbroken father canceled all his affairs and plans.
The Pool Has Gone

You can read more about the history on this property website. Here is another snippet:
Neophytos Neophytou, head of the municipality of the village of Prodromos, on the territory of which Berengaria is located, made an official statement after this incident, in which he emphasized that he did not believe in mysticism and did not consider the hotel “damned”. He insists that the rumors are unfounded and make it difficult to find investors, as people are wary of dealing with a hotel with a difficult biography.

And speaking of The Damned, it is worth pointing out that their Spic'n'span mix of Grimly Fiendish is in fact the best song of all time. But I digress. The Hotel now has new buyers, in the form of Prime Property Group.
